Marble Pothos Care Sheet

AKA Epipremnum aureum ‘Marble Queen’

Overview

Marble Pothos is a highly variegated cultivar prized for its creamy white and green marbled foliage. It grows more slowly than standard pothos varieties due to reduced chlorophyll, but it remains hardy, adaptable, and suitable for most indoor environments.

Light Requirements

  • Ideal light: Bright, indirect light to maintain strong variegation.

  • Tolerates: Medium light, but growth slows and marbling may fade.

  • Avoid: Low light, which encourages reversion to solid green.

  • Tip: East or north facing windows provide consistent gentle light.

Watering

  • Frequency: Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry.

  • Signs it needs water: Slight leaf curl, dry soil, lighter pot weight.

  • Overwatering signs: Yellow leaves, blackened stems, consistently wet soil.

  • Method: Water thoroughly until excess drains out. Empty saucer after 20-60 minutes.

Humidity

  • Accepts average home humidity.

  • Thrives with: Moderate humidity around 40 to 60 percent.

  • Boosting humidity: Grouping plants or a humidifer.

  • Avoid: Heavy misting that may encourage fungal issues.

Temperature

  • Ideal range: 65 to 85 F.

  • Avoid: Cold drafts, temperatures below 55 F, or direct heat from vents.

Soil

  • Best mix: Light, airy, and fast draining.

    • 50 percent high quality potting mix

    • 25 percent perlite

    • 25 percent coco coir or orchid bark

  • Goal: Prevent compaction and promote oxygen flow to roots.

Potting and Repotting

  • Repot every: 1 to 2 years or when roots circle the pot.

  • Pot choice: A pot with drainage holes.

  • Size up: Increase pot diameter by 1 to 2 inches only.

  • Note: Growth is naturally slower, so repotting may be less frequent.

Fertilizing

  • Growing season: Spring through early fall.

  • Frequency: Every 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Type: Balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.

  • Winter: Pause fertilizing.

Pruning and Training

  • Prune: To encourage fuller growth and maintain shape.

  • Training options:

    • Trail from shelves or hanging planters

    • Train up a moss pole

    • Wrap around a hoop or trellis

  • Propagation: Stem cuttings root easily in water or soil.

Common Problems

  • Fading variegation: Increase light.

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or insufficient light.

  • Brown tips: Low humidity or underwatering.

  • Slow growth: Normal for this cultivar, especially in lower light.

Pests

Marble Pothos is generally pest resistant but may encounter:

  • Spider mites

  • Mealybugs

  • Scale

  • Fungus gnats

Treatment: Botanical Brew Pest Shield is effective. Apply until dripping and repeat every 5 to 7 days until pests are gone.

Toxicity

  • Toxic to pets and humans if ingested.

  • Causes mouth irritation and stomach upset.

  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.
