Neanthe Bella Palm, Parlor Palm Care Sheet

Overview

The Neanthe Bella Palm (Chamaedorea elegans) is a slow growing, low maintenance tropical plant known for its soft, feathery fronds and excellent tolerance for indoor conditions. It’s one of the most forgiving palms for beginners and thrives in homes, offices, and low light spaces.

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Tolerates low light, making it ideal for rooms without strong natural sun.

  • Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the fronds.

Water

  • Keep soil evenly moist, but never soggy.

  • Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feel dry.

  • Reduce watering slightly in winter.

  • Use room temperature water to avoid shocking the roots.

Signs of underwatering: crispy tips, pale fronds. Signs of overwatering: yellowing fronds, mushy stems, soil staying wet for too long.

Humidity

  • Enjoys moderate humidity but adapts well to typical indoor levels.

  • Benefits from occasional misting or a nearby humidifier.

  • Avoid placing near heating vents.

Temperature

  • Ideal range: 65 to 80 F.

  • Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.

  • Never expose to temps below 50 F.

Soil

  • Use a well draining indoor potting mix.

  • A peat based or coco coir blend with perlite works well.

  • Avoid heavy soils that retain too much moisture.

Fertilizer

  • Feed lightly during spring and summer.

  • Use a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Do not fertilize in winter.

Growth Habit

  • Slow growing.

  • Mature height indoors: 2 to 4 feet.

  • Produces multiple stems with soft, arching fronds.

  • Non toxic to pets.

Repotting

  • Repot every 2 to 3 years or when roots circle the pot.

  • Choose a pot only 1 to 2 inches larger.

  • Parlor Palms prefer being slightly root bound.

Pruning

  • Remove yellow or brown fronds at the base using clean scissors.

  • Do not trim green fronds, as palms cannot regenerate from cut tips.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing fronds: overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown tips: low humidity, underwatering, or fluoride in tap water.

  • Spider mites: common in dry environments. Increase humidity and wipe fronds with a damp cloth.
